Most of the candidates feel very apprehensive about the GAMSAT Section II because here the candidates are expected to write impromptu essays. GAMSAT being a competitive test, Candidates get all the more worried about how they should structure the essay and what views should they put forward. If you too are feeling bogged down with such negative feeling then it is high time that you take an account of what you are doing about it. After all you have been writing essays since ages (remember your school day)! Of course the case is a bit more different for GAMSAT because you have to make the look and the feel of your essay more matured. Another challenge that you have to overcome in GAMSAT is that you have to write two essays in a span of one hour, which can be quite tasking if you do not have enough practice.
One of the keys to avoid such situations is to plan out your essay before you actually begin to write. In a GAMSAT question paper, Section II (Written Communication) comprises of two sets of quotations on two different themes and the candidate is expected to write separate essays on the two themes. Each set of quotations consist of five quotations a particular theme and the stand may be different in each quote. The candidates have to write an essay on the stand taken by one quote or can base their essay on all the viewpoints presented by different quotes. In the one hour that you are given to write the essay, five minutes are kept aside for planning each essay.
The five minutes that you are given before writing the essay are very crucial to the shaping up of the essay. These five minutes must be utilised in the most efficient way so that the end product, i.e. your essay turns out to be a winner. The first thing that you must do is read the quotes or comments very carefully. Try to have a grasp of the tone and the mood of each comment and once you have done that make a rough sketch of what you want to include in your essay. The period is generally referred to as the pre-writing stage.
Once you have decided what you want to include in the essay, jot down how you would like to introduce your essay and write the topics you will be including in your essay along with your main idea. Remember that an ideal introduction is that in which all the topics that will be dealt with in the main body of the essay is mentioned. These measures will ensure than once you have begun with the essay you do not lose track of your arguments. Also try to make the beginning of the essay interesting so that it catches the interest of the reader or examiner immediately.
After deciding on all the above mentioned topics, begin with your essay and keep a tab on which way your thoughts are wavering. You will see that the points you have jotted down during the pre-writing stage come very handy for you to stay focused.
