GAMSAT FAQ

1. What is GAMSAT?

GAMSAT is a selection test competently designed and marked by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) for medical schools offering graduate-entry programmes open to graduates of any discipline.

You will need to sit GAMSAT UK if you intend to apply for 2010 entry to one of the following 4-year graduate-entry medical/dental schools:

* St George’s, University of London
* The University of Nottingham at Derby
* The University of Wales Swansea
* Peninsula Dental School (please see Peninsula Dentistry entry)
* Keele University

Or to the 5-year degree at

* The Peninsula Medical School

2. What is the eligibility for GAMSAT?

All applicants must have completed, or be in the final year of a Bachelor degree. No preference is given to graduates with particular Bachelor degrees.

3. What is the registration procedure for GAMSAT?

Registration can be done online with payment by credit card or alternatively you can complete an online ‘Provisional’ registration and pay by bank draft.

4. What is the best way to study/prepare for GAMSAT?

We suggest that you should study methodically. Don’t keep everything on hold for the last moment. At least a 4 months preparation is required for GAMSAT. Last minute cramming up techniques are not going to work for GAMSAT. Always remember that slow and steady wins the race.

5. Can you suggest a step-by-step plan to succeed in GAMSAT?

There can never be a shotgun approach to preparing for any elimination test like GAMSAT. The amount of effort and the allocation of resources vary from person to person and are based on individual profiles. However, almost all successful preparation strategies have the following components:

A. Building up the knowledge base: It must have been years since you studied Physics, Chemistry and/or Biology. The first obvious step would be to spend about a month scanning through all basics. GAMSAT does NOT test your knowledge, so spending too much time trying to pick up detailed understanding can be fatal to your preparation. Hence the universal advice: Never use MCAT preparation material to prepare for GAMSAT.

B. Self evaluation: Once you have reclaimed your lost comfort level with all topics, hit the sample tests. Solve 5-6 full blown complete, GAMSAT like papers, or 20 sectional papers. This should help you identify your weakness profile.

C. Revisiting the basics: With this new found knowledge, pick up your text books and re-read through your troubled areas and strengthen your basics.

D. Fine-tune your strategy: This is perhaps the most critical and also most neglected component. Let’s face it, a GAMSAT is much more than just a collection of 185 questions – GAMSAT means a cauldron like atmosphere, immense, albeit, self imposed mental pressure and a daylong marathon of question solving. Excelling in this exercise requires knowledge, but it is the test taking strategies that will that differentiate between the good and the bad scores.

E. Let us consider section 3. Do you solve questions as you go, or do you pick up specific questions and solve only them? Or, in Section 1, would you prefer to solve the Reading Comprehension questions first or Critical reasoning ones? These are minute strategies that will make or break your result, and hence you should spend about a month in identifying and improving your test taking strategies.

6. I am working/studying full time. How can I best prepare for GAMSAT?

The first step to cracking GAMSAT is to believe that you CAN do it. Confidence and hard work is the key to success. If you are working/studying full time the best way to prepare for GAMSAT would be to start early, say almost a year before you actually plan to take GAMSAT. That way even if you put in 2 hours every day you would not lack behind in preparation. Remember regular practice leads to perfection.

7. I am not from a science background. How should I prepare?

GAMSAT as a whole tests your reasoning more than anything else. To crack GAMSAT you will need to be competent in all the three sections. If you are not from a science background you need to spend more time in that section. But always keep in mind you can’t neglect any section if you are serious about GAMSAT. You are to perform excellently overall to acquire that coveted seat in any of the top medical colleges.

17. How can I be sure that your questions and solutions are correct, pertinent and good?

ACER, and previous students – these are the two sources that helped us to analyse and understand GAMSAT. The three booklets are the only set of ACER released GAMSAT related content, and we spent thousands of man-hours understanding the underlying logic behind these questions. Each test paper is created by Subject Matter Experts (SME) who analyse the GAMSAT paper and determine the difficulty level after which question papers are created. The papers then undergo 4 rounds of review which includes self-review, technical review, language-review and final review. After the revisions are satisfactorily completed the papers are ready for use.
